We ended up camping at a super nice campground the night before the race. Surprisingly I wasn't too nervous for the race (I get much more nervous before I run a race). The hill climb was at Colorado State Monument. It was only about a 3 mile climb. I have never raced on a bike before and wasn't quite sure how to pace myself. Needless to say, it was a learning experience for both Dennen and I.
The rest of our team mates competed in a CRIT after the hill climb. Dennen and I were the photographers. While we were watching the men's CRIT, there was quite a bit of carnage... I was quickly relieved that we chose not to do that race. It was on a speedway track that had 6 tight curves. Many of the riders didn't make it around the curves. I have never seen such crazy bike crashes! As the riders gathered their body pieces and headed toward the crowd, you could see horrible bloody road rash all over their bodies (even on their faces). I don't think I'll be doing a CRIT any time soon.
All in all, we had a great time! We can't wait to compete in another race (now that we kind of know what we're doing).
