Ode to my neti pot

For those of you who don't know what a neti pot is, let me explain... Nasal irrigation is the personal hygiene practice in which the nasal cavity is washed to flush out excess mucus and debris while moistening the mucus membranes of the nose and sinuses. It has been practiced in India for centuries as one of the disciplines of yoga. There is evidence that nasal irrigation causes relief for both hay-fever and the common cold. Here it is in all it's glory.

Dennen and I first heard about this little beauty from Dennen's buddy Chris Kohler. He's a wildland firefighter, and as you could imagine, always had loads of soot and dust up in his nasal cavity.

During this semester I got a cold and I wanted to use anything that would get rid of it ASAP. I don't like to use medications (I'm more into homeopathic cures), and this is what was recommended to me. I used it twice a day and my cold went away very quickly.

As the semester went on, other people in my classes started to get colds. What did I recommend you may ask? The neti pot of course! At least 3 kids in my classes bought a neti pot and raved about it.

This time of year many people suffer from allergies (I'm lucky I'm not one of them). Read this article from the New York Times if you're still skeptical about a little ceramic pot that you put up your nose. Even when I don't have a cold, I still use it about 2-3 times per week.

The Neti Pot is a miracle! Every nose, in every household should have one. I spread the word as best I can, but still there are so many people with colds that are unbelievers. Once used, it is almost a born again experience isn't it? Spread the word!

I've never even heard of the Neti Pot, but you've got me so curious now I might have to go pick one up! :) How does it work? You just stick it up your nose and breathe??

Hallelujah!

Check out some video clips online of how it works. You just add warm water and a little bit of salt, tilt your head, and the water flushes out your sinus cavity.

Didn't Dwight use one of these in an episode of the office? I might want to try it for my allergies, where do you get them?

They should have them at any health food store or even in the grocery store. I would try Good Earth. Hilary and I found a used one at a thrift store in Logan for a quarter.

I have WAY bad allergies and I saw the neti pot on Oprah a long time ago but didn't give it a second thought. Since you are such a believer, I may just have to try it!

Hasn't grandma done this for years?

No, grandma and my mom use that baby snot sucker and shoot saline up into their sinus cavities. I tried it once and it hurts like the dickens!! Using the neti pot feels good. It doesn't feel like you got pool water up your nose.
