Our first triathlon

I love endurance races of any type. "Crazy" you may call me, but I can't get enough of them! I think everyone in this life has their talents and things that they love, this is mine.

Dennen and I did our first sprint triathlon (750 yard swim, 12 km bike, 5 km run) last weekend. We trained our butts off, the day came, and it was snowing and freezing cold. Did we let that stop us? No siree. We pushed on and got our $25 worth (plus a little more).

The swimming part is definitely not my strength and something that I need to work on. 90% of triathletes have not started out as swimmers (this makes me feel not so bad). Dennen on the other hand, is great at swimming, and has the perfect body for it.

Next came the dreaded biking... Why dreaded? Look at our pictures and you'll see why. I can run in very cold temperatures and be fine, but coming straight out of a pool and hopping on a bike to ride in the wind and snow does not keep my body warm. During the majority of the ride, snow/sleet was pelting my eyeballs (yes, it hurt). At two distinct times during the ride I had thoughts of having to get my fingers and toes amputated because of the unbearable temperature.

When I rode in I wasn't thinking logically, and was shivering uncontrollably (signs of hypothermia). Thank goodness my sister and brother in-law were there to help me out. There was absolutely no way I could go on unless I warmed up. I went into the locker room and took a hot shower while my sister dried my clothes under the hand dryer.

After I was somewhat warmed up, it was time for the run. I felt great the whole time while I was running. Dennen said that he couldn't feel his hands or feet during his run (I'm glad I took that shower).

Because it was so cold, no one really stuck around after to find out the results. A couple days ago I found out that I got 2nd in the women's category, and Dennen got 5th in the men's.I guess they didn't count transition times, because I did take a mighty long shower. What's even better is that I got prizes for getting 2nd! One of the prizes were 5 coupons for free loaves of bread from Great Harvest. I want to spread the wealth, so I'm going to give 2 of them away... Leave a comment and I'll put your name in a random drawing. I'll announce the winners when I get back from San Diego which will be the 11th. Good luck!

Hil, you are HARD CORE!! I'm seriously impressed...I think that freezing cold sleet and snow would've stopped me. Great job and congrats on getting 2nd place!!

Good job! I was gonna do a sprint triathlon this spring/summer, but for obvious reasons, I'll have to wait until next year.

I'm amazed by you guys! Running in cold temps is not my thing and I can't imagine being all wet for it! Maybe next time they should consider putting swimming last.. You guys placed really well too! Way to go!

Oh my, your tri was way more intense than ours!! You guys are tough! First it was a great day weather wise, and the swimming was last, so we didn't have to do the other events wet, which isn't normal, but I was glad. Congrats on getting 2nd!! You were always speedy. Our tri was $40. The provo is $65, I thought that was a lot. Hope I win great harvest now! J/K, have fun in the sun
