Howdy-ho from Maine

I apologize for the dearth of posts lately. With all the excitement and work of moving, unpacking, sightseeing, ordering textbooks, going to Walmart again and again, and trying to wrap my mind around all the cool things to do, one tends to put blogging on the back burner. Anyway, we're finally arriving at the point that we consider ourselves "settled". There are no more boxes to unpack, we can drive to a handful of places without becoming hopelessly disoriented, we figured out how the Portland garbage system works, and I finally memorized our new zip code (04103).

One pleasant surprise is that we live in the beach country of Maine. Basically, all the nice, sandy beaches in Maine are within an hour drive. And we've discovered that Finn, like most toddlers, loves sand and therefore loves the beach. So this Saturday we went to Old Orchard Beach, about 20 minutes south of Portland. It is very Coney Island-esque. Take an amusement park (complete with a ferris wheel), a huge pier with tons of shops, lots of fried food and pizza, a generous helping of alcohol, a seven mile beach, a hundred motels with kitchenettes, a few muscle cars and bullet bikes to spice it up, and 25,000 people with New England accents that haven't seen the sun since September, put 'em in a blender, and you have Old Orchard. I've never been to a beach quite like it. Being the Memorial Day weekend, parking was a little difficult but the people watching made up for it. I start school on Tuesday so we hope to make it to the beach tomorrow (weather permitting).

Hope everyone is well and we send our love from the Eastern Seaboard!
